Staniel Cay Harbour

The social hub of the central Exumas with fuel, provisions, and legendary island hospitality.

Staniel Cay sits at the geographic and social heart of the central Exumas. The small harbour fronting the settlement offers the only reliable fuel and provisioning between Georgetown and Highbourne Cay, making it an essential stop for cruisers transiting the island chain.

While the anchorage space directly off the cay is limited, the famous Staniel Cay Yacht Club provides slips, fuel, ice, and a welcoming restaurant-bar that has drawn sailors for generations. Most cruisers anchor at nearby Big Majors Spot and dinghy in for supplies and socializing.

Approach and Anchoring

The harbour lies on the western side of Staniel Cay, protected by Harvey Cay to the south. Approach carefully, watching for the reef running from the yacht club pier toward Harvey Cay. Anchoring space on the cay side south of the fuel pier is limited, and strong tidal currents require attention to scope and swing room.

Most cruisers find better anchoring at Big Majors Spot to the northeast and dinghy in to the yacht club. This provides more room and keeps you closer to the swimming pigs and Thunderball Grotto.

Holding and Protection

Where anchoring space permits, holding is good in 8-10 feet over sand. Protection is reasonable from most directions given the surrounding cays, but the area experiences strong tidal currents that can make anchoring challenging.

Be aware of the shallow reef west of the yacht club that parallels the pier. Consult Explorer Charts for precise hazard locations and approach from established waypoints.

What's Ashore and Nearby

Staniel Cay Yacht Club is the centerpiece of the community, offering 18 slips with fuel, water, electricity, Wi-Fi, and ice. The restaurant and bar serve excellent Bahamian cuisine and cold drinks in a quintessential island atmosphere.

The settlement includes a small grocery store and Happy People Marina, which offers limited services for smaller boats. Thunderball Grotto lies just south of the yacht club, and Big Majors Spot with the swimming pigs is a short dinghy ride northeast.

Practical Considerations

Staniel Cay represents roughly the halfway point between Nassau and Georgetown, making it a natural provisioning stop. Top off fuel and water here before continuing in either direction, as options become limited.

The yacht club monitors VHF Channel 16. Reservations for slips are recommended during peak season. Credit cards are accepted, though having cash on hand is advisable throughout the Exumas.

Getting there

Staniel Cay lies approximately 75 nautical miles southeast of Nassau via the Exuma Banks. The cay has its own airstrip with scheduled flights from Nassau. By water, approach from the banks side using established waypoints and be watchful for reef hazards near the yacht club. Consult Explorer Charts EX-18 and EX-18A for detailed navigation guidance.
