Can You Bring a Pet to the Bahamas on a Boat?

Cruising to the Bahamas with your pet is permitted but requires advance preparation and proper documentation. The Bahamas has import requirements designed to prevent the introduction of diseases that could affect the local animal population.

The first step is obtaining an import permit from the Bahamas Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources. This should be arranged before your departure date, as processing takes time. Contact the ministry directly or work with a pet import service to obtain the necessary permit for your specific animal.

You will need a veterinary health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 48 hours of your arrival in the Bahamas. This certificate must confirm your pet is healthy and free of infectious diseases. Keep the original certificate with your travel documents.

Rabies vaccination is required, and you must have documentation proving vaccination is current. The timing requirements vary, so verify current regulations. Some countries require rabies vaccinations be given at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel.

When completing your Click2Clear declaration, indicate that you are traveling with live animals in the stores section. Upload copies of your import permit, health certificate, and vaccination records in the documents section. Having all paperwork organized and accessible will smooth the clearance process upon arrival.

Certain dog breeds may face restrictions or additional requirements. Similarly, exotic pets have different import regulations than common domestic animals. Research requirements specific to your pet type well in advance.

For charter guests wishing to bring pets, discuss this with your charter company during booking. Not all charter vessels accommodate pets, and additional cleaning fees may apply.
