Ben Bay Beach
A protected horseshoe cove with calm snorkeling waters even when the Atlantic churns
Hidden along the Atlantic coast of North Eleuthera, Ben Bay Beach is a near-perfect horseshoe of sand that creates its own tranquil lagoon. The narrow mouth of the bay acts as a natural breakwater, keeping the inner waters calm and clear even when the open ocean beyond is rough.
This natural protection makes Ben Bay one of the most reliable swimming and snorkeling spots on the Atlantic side of the island. The sandy bottom slopes gently, the visibility is excellent, and rocky outcrops at the bay's edges harbor schools of colorful reef fish. For those willing to navigate the rutted dirt road to reach it, Ben Bay rewards with solitude and some of the easiest snorkeling on Eleuthera.
The Protected Lagoon
The horseshoe shape of Ben Bay creates a sheltered pocket of water that behaves more like a calm Caribbean cove than a typical Atlantic beach. Even when waves crash on the outer reef, the inner bay remains gentle and inviting. The sandy bottom is even and free of rocks, making it safe for wading and swimming.
This natural design means Ben Bay is a reliable choice when other Atlantic beaches are too rough. Families with children particularly appreciate the predictable conditions.
Snorkeling the Rocky Edges
While the center of the bay is sandy and open, the rocky formations that protect the cove also create excellent snorkeling habitat. Swim toward either arm of the horseshoe to find coral patches and reef fish congregating around the structure.
Bring your own gear, as there are no facilities on the beach. The water is clear enough that a mask and snorkel reveal a surprising variety of marine life just steps from shore.
Reaching Ben Bay
The drive to Ben Bay requires patience and a vehicle with decent clearance. From the main highway, a series of dirt roads wind through scrub and forest before emerging at the casuarina-shaded parking area directly on the sand.
A large puddle sometimes blocks the final stretch after heavy rain. If impassable by car, park on the roadside and walk the last few minutes. The effort is rewarded by a beach that feels genuinely remote and undiscovered.
Getting there
From North Eleuthera Airport, drive west 1.5 miles to the large gas station and turn right toward Spanish Wells. After 6 miles, just past a sharp 90-degree left bend, take the first dirt road to the right. Continue 0.2 miles and turn left at the fork. After another 0.3 miles, turn right at the next fork. Continue half a mile and turn left. Follow this track for a couple of minutes to park in the shade of the casuarina trees on the beach. After heavy rain, a puddle may block the final stretch.
