Poseidon's Point

Shore-accessible reef where tarpon glide through and snorkelers explore from rock ledges

Poseidon's Point is one of Long Island's rare shore-accessible reef sites, offering divers and snorkelers an easy entry to a thriving underwater ecosystem. Located near Burnt Ground in the island's far north, this site features rock ledge entry leading to an extensive offshore reef protected from prevailing swells.

The site is famous for one thing above all: big tarpon swimming through the reef in numbers rarely seen elsewhere on the island. Combined with a convenient 30 to 50-foot drop-off just 100 feet offshore, Poseidon's Point delivers a rewarding experience without requiring a boat.

Tarpon Encounters

Poseidon's Point stands out as one of the few locations on Long Island where you can reliably encounter large tarpon on the reef. These silver giants, some exceeding five feet in length, cruise the reef edge with slow, deliberate movements that allow close observation.

The tarpon seem unbothered by divers who approach calmly. Watch them glide between coral heads, occasionally rolling at the surface to gulp air. Early morning dives offer the best chances as tarpon patrol before midday heat.

Shore Access and Entry

Unlike boat-dependent sites, Poseidon's Point allows geared-up divers and snorkelers to walk directly into the water. The entry involves crossing smooth rock ledges rather than a traditional sandy beach. These ledges slope into the shallows, where you can fin out to the reef.

Approximately 100 feet offshore, the bottom drops from the shallows to 30-50 feet over the reef crest. The extensive offshore reef provides protection from open-ocean swells, creating manageable conditions even with moderate winds.

Drift Snorkeling

With favorable wind and tide, Poseidon's Point offers excellent drift snorkeling opportunities. Enter at one end of the reef, float with the current along the coral gardens, and exit downstream. The protected nature of the bay keeps surface conditions comfortable.

For those without boats, this is arguably the best snorkeling location on Long Island. The reef teems with sergeant majors, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and juvenile French angelfish darting between sea fans.

Getting there

Poseidon's Point is reached by car from Stella Maris. Drive north through Burnt Ground, passing Pratt's store. About 1,000 feet beyond, the road makes a dog-leg turn right. Take the immediate right onto the beach road and follow it approximately one mile through two sharp bends to the shore. Parking is informal on the road shoulder.
