7-Day Eleuthera Sailing Itinerary
Experience the full majesty of Eleuthera, the 110-mile ribbon of island stretching through the Bahamas Out Islands. This comprehensive 7-day itinerary takes you from the prosperous fishing village of Spanish Wells in the north to the expansive harbor of Rock Sound in the south, with stops at every significant anchorage along the way.
Your crewed catamaran will hug Eleuthera's protected western shore, where the turquoise shallows of the Bight contrast dramatically with the deep Atlantic on the island's eastern side. With daily sailing legs of 10-18 nautical miles, you will explore colonial villages, underground caves, natural tidal pools, and some of the clearest water in the Caribbean.
Spanish Wells and Preacher's Cave
Begin your charter in Spanish Wells, a tidy fishing village with colorful clapboard houses and golf carts outnumbering cars. Provision at Food Fair before exploring ashore. Tender to nearby Preacher's Cave on North Eleuthera, where shipwrecked Eleutheran Adventurers sheltered in the 1600s after wrecking on Devils Backbone reef. The nearby Sapphire Blue Hole offers exceptional snorkeling in crystalline depths.
Overnight: Spanish Wells Harbour
Royal Island and Egg Island
Sail 3 nautical miles northwest to Royal Island's magnificent natural harbor, offering some of the best protected anchorage in the Bahamas with excellent holding. Spend the day snorkeling the extensive reef system surrounding Egg Island to the north. At low tide, walk the stunning sand beach connecting the two islands. The waters here teem with sea turtles, rays, and colorful reef fish in 6-20 feet of crystal visibility.
Overnight: Royal Island Harbour
Harbour Island
Navigate 8 nautical miles southeast through or around Devils Backbone to anchor off Dunmore Town. The colonial capital of Harbour Island enchants with narrow lanes lined by pastel cottages draped in bougainvillea. Walk the legendary 3-mile Pink Sands Beach where crushed coral creates the distinctive rose coloring. Browse boutiques on Bay Street, then enjoy waterfront dining at establishments like The Landing or Sip Sip for fresh lobster quesadillas.
Overnight: Dunmore Town Harbour
Current Cut and Glass Window Bridge
Depart early to transit Current Cut at slack water, approximately 2 hours after Nassau high tide when tidal currents can otherwise exceed 6 knots. Continue 15 nautical miles south along Eleuthera's protected western shore to anchor near the Glass Window Bridge. This dramatic 30-foot-wide isthmus connects north and south Eleuthera where the deep blue Atlantic crashes yards from the calm turquoise Bight. Visit Queen's Baths tidal pools at low tide.
Overnight: Glass Window Bridge Anchorage
Hatchet Bay and Cave Exploration
Sail 10 nautical miles south to Hatchet Bay, one of Eleuthera's safest landlocked anchorages with depths of 7-25 feet. Note the heavy turtle grass beds when setting anchor. Explore spectacular Hatchet Bay Caves by dinghy, where caverns are large enough to motor into and home to resident bat colonies. Ashore, find a well-stocked grocery, friendly restaurants, and the authentic rhythm of island life.
Overnight: Hatchet Bay
Governor's Harbour and Cupid's Cay
Sail 12 nautical miles south to Governor's Harbour, the historic heart of Eleuthera and its largest settlement. Anchor off Cupid's Cay in 10-14 feet with good holding in sand close to shore. The waterfront features colonial architecture, a Friday night fish fry, and the relaxed pace that defines Out Island life. Explore the pastel-painted government buildings and historic Anglican church, then watch the sunset paint the harbor golden.
Overnight: Cupid's Cay, Governor's Harbour
Rock Sound and Ocean Hole
Complete your Eleuthera exploration with an 18 nautical mile sail south to Rock Sound, the island's largest southern harbor. The expansive anchorage offers multiple positions depending on wind direction with protection from east through southeast. Ashore, visit the famous Ocean Hole, a mysterious 600-foot-deep blue hole in the center of town believed to connect to the ocean. Explore Cathedral Cave and the Boiling Hole nearby before your charter concludes.

Frequently asked questions
- How challenging is sailing the full length of Eleuthera?
- The western shore of Eleuthera offers protected sailing in the Bight, with minimal ocean swells. Daily legs of 10-18 nautical miles are easily accomplished in 2-4 hours of motor-sailing in typical conditions. The main navigation challenges are Current Cut (timed at slack water) and the approach to Harbour Island.
- What is the holding like at the various anchorages?
- Royal Island and Governor's Harbour offer excellent sand holding. Hatchet Bay requires patience due to thick turtle grass that can cause anchors to skip. Rock Sound has mixed holding with rock and hard sand. Your experienced captain will select optimal anchor positions at each stop.
- Are there fuel and water stops along the route?
- Spanish Wells Yacht Haven offers fuel, water, and ice. Governor's Harbour has limited marine services. Rock Sound has basic supplies. Most charter catamarans carry sufficient fuel and water for a 7-day itinerary, with the crew managing consumption to ensure comfort throughout.
