7-Day North Eleuthera and Spanish Wells Sailing Itinerary
Immerse yourself in the authentic character of North Eleuthera and Spanish Wells on this 7-day sailing adventure through the Out Islands. From the prosperous fishing village of Spanish Wells to the colonial elegance of Harbour Island, this itinerary explores the cays, reefs, and settlements that define this distinctive corner of the Bahamas.
Your crewed catamaran will anchor in protected harbors where Eleutheran Adventurers first settled in the 1600s, snorkel reefs that have claimed countless ships on Devils Backbone, and explore uninhabited islands where beaches stretch empty to the horizon. With sailing legs of 3-15 nautical miles, you will have time to truly know each destination.
Spanish Wells Arrival
Arrive in Spanish Wells, a unique Bahamian settlement where residents trace ancestry to Loyalist settlers and fishing has sustained families for generations. Provision at the well-stocked Food Fair before exploring by golf cart through tidy streets lined with colorful clapboard homes. Visit Spanish Wells Yacht Haven marina for any final supplies. The hurricane hole on the western side offers exceptional shelter with mangrove tie-offs if weather threatens.
Overnight: Spanish Wells Yacht Haven
Royal Island Deep Water Sanctuary
Sail 3 nautical miles northwest to Royal Island, whose massive natural harbor provides some of the most protected deep-water anchorage in the Bahamas. The privately-owned island features excellent holding and room for multiple vessels. Spend the afternoon exploring by dinghy, discovering hidden beaches and snorkeling the reef along the northern shore. The anchorage offers good cell coverage for those needing to stay connected.
Overnight: Royal Island Harbour
Egg Island Reef Adventure
Tender north to Egg Island where the extensive surrounding reef creates world-class snorkeling in 6-20 feet of crystalline water. The reef teems with sea turtles, rays, nurse sharks, and colorful tropical fish. At low tide, walk the spectacular sand beach connecting Egg Island to Royal Island, one of the most photogenic spots in the Out Islands. Return to Royal Island anchorage as sunset paints the harbor in golden light.
Overnight: Royal Island Harbour
Preacher's Cave and Devils Backbone
Sail 5 nautical miles southeast to anchor off North Eleuthera near Preacher's Cave. This historic cavern sheltered shipwrecked Eleutheran Adventurers after their vessel struck Devils Backbone reef in the 1640s, and Sunday services held here gave the cave its name. Snorkel the nearby Sapphire Blue Hole with its remarkable depth and clarity. The Devils Backbone reef has claimed countless vessels, and wreck snorkeling opportunities abound for the adventurous.
Overnight: North Eleuthera, off Preacher's Cave
Harbour Island and Dunmore Town
Navigate 6 nautical miles southeast to Harbour Island, timing passage through Devils Backbone channel with good overhead light for reef visibility. Anchor off Dunmore Town, the oldest parliament settlement in the Bahamas, where pastel colonial cottages line narrow lanes shaded by palms and bougainvillea. Walk the legendary 3-mile Pink Sands Beach, browse boutiques on Bay Street, and dine at restaurants like Rock House or The Landing.
Overnight: Dunmore Town Harbour
Man Island and Current Cut
Sail 4 nautical miles south to uninhabited Man Island for a final day of beach exploration in complete privacy. The anchorage offers excellent protection and holding, with white sand beaches on the bay side and sea glass hunting on the Atlantic shore. In late afternoon, time your transit of Current Cut at slack water, approximately 2 hours after Nassau high tide, when the otherwise 6-8 knot current allows safe passage into the Bight of Eleuthera.
Overnight: Bight of Eleuthera, south of Current Cut
Glass Window Bridge and Return
Sail 8 nautical miles south along Eleuthera's protected western shore to the Glass Window Bridge area. This dramatic 30-foot-wide isthmus where deep Atlantic waters crash beside calm turquoise shallows is among the most photographed spots in the Bahamas. Visit Queen's Baths at low tide to soak in sun-warmed tidal pools. Return north to Spanish Wells (15 nautical miles) or continue to your next charter destination.

Frequently asked questions
- What makes Spanish Wells unique in the Bahamas?
- Spanish Wells is a prosperous fishing community where residents trace ancestry to British Loyalists. The village has a distinct character with immaculate homes, golf carts as primary transportation, and a working waterfront. It offers the best provisioning in the region and genuine Out Island authenticity rarely found in tourist destinations.
- How do we navigate Current Cut safely?
- Current Cut experiences tidal flows exceeding 6-8 knots during peak movement. Plan transit for slack water, approximately 1.5-2 hours after Nassau high tide. Your experienced captain will monitor conditions and may suggest the alternative Six Shilling Channel 11 miles south if conditions warrant. Never attempt Current Cut against the current in an underpowered vessel.
- Is Devils Backbone passage required to reach Harbour Island?
- While Devils Backbone is the most direct route, vessels can approach Harbour Island from the outside by sailing around North Eleuthera, adding approximately 5 nautical miles. Many cruisers without local knowledge choose this safer approach. If transiting Devils Backbone, do so with good overhead light, updated charts, and careful attention to markers.
