Big Majors Spot

Home of the famous swimming pigs and the Exumas' most iconic anchorage.

Big Majors Spot is the most photographed anchorage in the Exumas and likely all of the Bahamas. Tucked between Big Major Cay and Staniel Cay, this protected bight is home to the world-famous swimming pigs that paddle out to greet arriving dinghies and yachts.

The anchorage offers excellent holding in sand with good protection from most directions, making it the preferred overnight stop for cruisers visiting Staniel Cay. From here, Thunderball Grotto lies a short dinghy ride away, and the amenities of Staniel Cay Yacht Club are within easy reach.

Approach and Anchoring

Big Majors Spot lies immediately northeast of Staniel Cay, easily identifiable by the beach where the pigs congregate. The anchorage is much larger than the crowded area directly off Staniel Cay, with excellent holding in 6-10 feet of water over sand bottom. The area is open from the west-southwest to west-northwest, so monitor weather forecasts and consider alternative anchorages if westerly winds are expected.

Approach from the banks side via well-marked channels. Strong tidal currents flow through the area, so allow adequate scope and room to swing. Consult your Explorer Charts for precise waypoints and hazard locations.

Holding and Protection

The holding at Big Majors Spot is excellent in sand, making it reliable for overnight stays in settled conditions. Protection is good from easterly through southerly winds, with Fowl Cay providing additional shelter to the north.

The anchorage remains exposed to westerly weather systems. When fronts approach from the west, experienced cruisers relocate to more protected options such as the lee of Staniel Cay or inside Compass Cay marina.

What's Ashore and Nearby

The swimming pigs of Big Major Cay are the main attraction. These semi-wild pigs swim out to boats expecting treats, creating unforgettable photo opportunities. Please feed them only appropriate foods and respect that they are wild animals.

Thunderball Grotto, the underwater cave made famous by James Bond films, lies between Big Major Cay and Staniel Cay. Snorkel at slack tide near low water for best visibility and easiest access. Staniel Cay Yacht Club offers fuel, provisions, ice, and a welcoming bar and restaurant.

Practical Considerations

Big Majors Spot gets crowded during peak season from December through April. Arriving early afternoon often secures better positioning. The anchorage sees significant tour boat traffic during daytime hours as day-trippers from Nassau visit the pigs.

Anchor lights are required. Strong tidal currents mean boats swing in unexpected ways, so leave generous room between vessels. Check tide tables before dinghy excursions to Thunderball Grotto.

Getting there

Big Majors Spot lies approximately 75 nautical miles southeast of Nassau and is accessible via the Exuma Banks from either Georgetown to the south or Norman's Cay to the north. Most cruisers approach from the banks side using established waypoints. The nearest airstrip is on Staniel Cay. Consult Explorer Charts EX-18 and EX-18A for detailed approaches and hazard locations.
