Fishers Bay
Drop your hook in the heart of Great Guana's social scene, where Grabbers Beach Bar and waterfront restaurants are just a dinghy ride from your cockpit.
Fishers Bay is Great Guana Cay's most popular anchorage, serving as the gateway to one of the Abacos' liveliest beach bar scenes. Located just north of Settlement Harbour on the cay's Sea of Abaco side, this generous bay offers good holding and protection in prevailing winds, with dinghy access to Grabbers Beach Bar and easy walking distance to the legendary Nippers on the Atlantic side.
The anchorage is large enough for numerous boats to spread out comfortably, and the protection from north through southeast winds makes it a reliable stop during much of the cruising season. Whether you're here for a quick lunch stop or lingering through a Sunday Pig Roast at Nippers, Fishers Bay puts you in the center of the action.
Approach and Entrance
Great Guana Cay stretches for seven miles along the eastern edge of the Sea of Abaco, approximately eight nautical miles north of Marsh Harbour. Fishers Bay lies on the southwest side of the cay, just north of Settlement Harbour and the community's main dock.
Approach Fishers Bay from the west through the Sea of Abaco. The entrance is straightforward with adequate depth for most cruising vessels. Watch for shallow patches near the ruins of the government dock on the north side of the bay. Favor the center and southern portions of the anchorage for the deepest water.
Holding and Protection
Fishers Bay offers good protection from north through southeast winds, covering the prevailing conditions during most of the cruising season. The bottom is mixed sand and grass with good holding once your anchor is well set. In depths ranging from eight to twelve feet, most boats find comfortable swinging room.
The anchorage is exposed to westerly winds. If forecast winds exceed fifteen knots from the west or northwest, the bay can become rolly and uncomfortable. In such conditions, consider relocating to Settlement Harbour farther south or to Bakers Bay on the north end of the cay.
What's Ashore
Fishers Bay provides immediate access to Great Guana Cay's social scene. Grabbers Beach Bar sits at the eastern end of the bay with a small dock, serving island drinks, casual fare, and their signature frozen Grabber cocktails. The Blue Water Grill on the north side of the anchorage offers additional dining.
A short walk across the narrow cay leads to Nippers Beach Bar and Grill on the Atlantic side, famous for its Sunday Pig Roast parties, dramatic ocean views, and the Nipper's swimming pool carved into the rocky shoreline. The settlement has a small grocery store for basic provisions.
Nearby Attractions
Beyond the beach bar scene, Great Guana Cay offers seven miles of pristine Atlantic beach, considered one of the finest stretches of sand in the Bahamas. The reef systems offshore provide excellent snorkeling, and the calm waters of the Sea of Abaco are ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding.
Bakers Bay at the northern end of the cay offers an alternative anchorage in different wind conditions, though access to the private development is restricted. Man-O-War Cay and Hope Town are short sails to the south, while Treasure Cay lies to the north, making Fishers Bay a natural stop on any Sea of Abaco itinerary.
Getting there
