Hawks Nest Creek Anchorage

Cat Island's only all-weather refuge, where a protected creek and full-service marina offer shelter when westerly winds make open anchorages untenable.

Hawks Nest Creek provides the only genuinely protected anchorage on Cat Island, making it an essential waypoint for cruisers when westerly winds threaten the island's exposed western shore. Located at the southern tip of Cat Island, this creek system offers shelter from all wind directions, with Hawks Nest Resort and Marina providing full services for visiting boats.

While the anchorage inside the creek affords excellent protection, holding can be poor in the soft bottom. Many cruisers opt for a slip at the marina rather than anchoring, taking advantage of fuel, water, electricity, and the resort's amenities including a restaurant, pool, and beach access.

Approach and Entry

Hawks Nest Creek is located on the west side of Cat Island's southern tip. The entrance requires careful navigation, with a recommended approach waypoint approximately three-tenths of a mile southwest of the entrance. The channel carries depths of four to six feet through most of the creek, shallowing quickly about three-tenths of a mile east of the marina.

The marina entrance has a draft of 7 feet at mean low water, with the inside basin carrying 16 feet or more. Cruisers with deeper drafts should time their arrival for higher tide stages. Contact the marina on VHF for current conditions and slip availability before entering.

Anchorage Conditions

Inside Hawks Nest Creek, an anchorage area exists beyond the marina where vessels can drop anchor in protected waters. While the protection from wind and seas is excellent from all directions, the holding is notably poor in the soft muddy bottom. Multiple anchor sets may be required to achieve adequate holding.

Cruisers planning to ride out rough weather should consider taking a marina slip rather than anchoring. The peace of mind that comes with secure dockage in challenging conditions is worth the modest slip fees, and the resort amenities make an extended stay comfortable.

Marina Facilities

Hawks Nest Resort and Marina offers 28 slips accommodating boats of various sizes, with 50-amp and 100-amp electrical service available. The marina maintains 40,000 gallons of diesel storage and provides fresh water, ice, showers, and laundry facilities. Two air-conditioned fish cleaning houses serve visiting anglers.

Marina guests have access to the resort's freshwater pool, clubhouse bar, and restaurant. The beachfront location makes this one of the more appealing marina stops in the Out Islands, combining practical services with genuine resort amenities.

Ashore at Hawks Nest

Hawks Nest Resort occupies a stunning beachfront setting on Cat Island's southern shore. The restaurant serves fresh Bahamian seafood and provides a welcome change from cooking aboard after extended passages. The pool and beach offer relaxation options for crew members tired of boat chores.

The southern tip of Cat Island is relatively remote, with limited services beyond the resort. However, the natural beauty of the area rewards exploration, with pristine beaches and excellent snorkeling within reach. The resort can arrange fishing excursions and diving trips for interested guests.

Frequently asked questions

Should I anchor or take a marina slip at Hawks Nest?
Given the poor holding in the creek anchorage, taking a marina slip is recommended, especially if you are seeking shelter from deteriorating weather. The marina fees are reasonable and include access to resort amenities.
What is the controlling depth at Hawks Nest Creek?
The creek carries 4-6 feet through most of its length, with 7 feet at the marina entrance at mean low tide. The inside marina basin is 16 feet or deeper. Time your entry for higher tide stages if your draft approaches these limits.
Is Hawks Nest a good hurricane hole?
Hawks Nest provides the best storm protection on Cat Island, but cruisers should carefully evaluate their options during hurricane season. The poor holding in the anchorage area makes marina slips preferable during severe weather events.
