What Type of Electrical Plugs and Voltage Does the Bahamas Use?

The Bahamas uses the same electrical system as the United States: Type A and Type B plugs with 120 volts at 60 Hz. American travelers do not need any plug adapters or voltage converters. Your US electronics, chargers, and appliances will work directly in Bahamian outlets without modification.

One of the conveniences of traveling to the Bahamas from the United States is complete electrical compatibility. The Bahamas uses the same power system as the US: Type A and Type B electrical outlets providing 120 volts at 60 Hz frequency.

Type A plugs feature two flat parallel prongs, while Type B plugs add a third round grounding pin below the two flat prongs. Type B outlets accept both plug types. This is identical to what you find throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

American travelers can pack their electronics without any special preparation. Your phone chargers, laptop adapters, camera batteries, hair dryers, electric shavers, and all other devices will plug directly into Bahamian outlets and operate normally. No adapters, converters, or transformers are required.

Travelers from Europe, the UK, Australia, and most other regions will need plug adapters to physically fit their devices into Bahamian outlets. Additionally, if your devices are not rated for 120V operation (many modern electronics are dual-voltage 100-240V, but check the label), you may also need a voltage converter to prevent damage.

For boaters, marina shore power connections in the Bahamas follow US standards. Most docks offer 30-amp or 50-amp service with standard US-type connectors. Charter yachts are equipped with appropriate shore power cables and onboard electrical systems compatible with local power.

On remote anchorages away from shore power, charter yachts generate electricity through their engine-driven alternators, generators, solar panels, or wind generators. Your electronic devices charge normally from the boat's 120V inverter system or USB outlets.

Key points

  • Type A and Type B plugs (same as US, Canada, Mexico)
  • Standard voltage is 120V at 60Hz frequency
  • No adapter or voltage converter needed for US travelers
  • European and UK travelers will need plug adapters and possibly converters
  • Marina shore power connections follow US standards

Do charter boats have outlets to charge phones?
Yes, modern charter yachts have 120V outlets throughout the cabin for charging devices. Many also have USB charging ports built into the electrical panel. The crew can show you all available charging locations.
Is there electricity in the Out Islands?
Yes, the Out Islands including the Abacos have electrical service provided by Bahamas Power and Light. Most homes, businesses, and marinas have reliable power, though occasional outages occur. Remote areas may rely on generators.
