Double Bay Beach
A three-mile Atlantic paradise with pink sand and reef snorkeling at both ends
Double Bay Beach is one of the great hidden treasures of South-Central Eleuthera: more than three miles of wide, pink-tinged sand stretching along the Atlantic coast between Governor's Harbour and Savannah Sound. The beach is spectacularly beautiful, with gorgeous blue water that shifts through every shade of turquoise as it meets the pale shore.
The length of the beach means you can walk for an hour and still have fresh sand ahead. Snorkeling opportunities exist at both ends, where reef chains run from the shore out to deeper water. For those seeking the kind of expansive, uncrowded beach experience that defined the Bahamas before mass tourism, Double Bay delivers magnificently.
Three Miles of Pink Sand
Double Bay is simply enormous. The beach stretches for over three miles, far enough that the opposite ends are barely visible from the center. The sand carries a pink hue characteristic of Eleuthera's finest beaches, created by the same crushed coral and foraminifera that color Harbour Island's famous shore.
The width of the beach varies with the tide, but even at high water there is plenty of room to spread out. On most days, you will have long stretches entirely to yourself, with only the occasional beachcomber or vacation rental guest in sight.
Snorkeling the Reef Chains
At both the northern and southern ends of Double Bay, reef chains extend from the shore toward the outer reefs. These provide excellent snorkeling habitat, with coral formations, sea fans, and a variety of reef fish congregating around the structure.
The distance between snorkeling areas is considerable given the beach's length, so plan accordingly. The Atlantic side means conditions are best on calm days; check the weather and choose a morning when the ocean is flat for the best visibility and safety.
Access and Accommodations
Reaching Double Bay requires navigating a few turns off Queen's Highway. From the main road, a paved road leads toward the coast, then transitions to a gravel and finally sand track that deposits you at the parking area near the beach.
Vacation rental homes dot the shoreline, including some of the most beautiful properties on Eleuthera. There are no public facilities on the beach itself, so bring water and provisions. The nearest restaurants and shops are in Governor's Harbour or Savannah Sound.
Getting there
From Governor's Harbour gas station, drive south 8.4 miles on Queen's Highway. From Savannah Sound gas station, drive north 3.1 miles. Turn onto the paved road marked by columns on either side. Follow the narrow causeway with inland ponds on both sides for about a mile, then turn right at the T-junction. Continue roughly a mile on the gravel road, then take the sand road on your left for a short distance to the beach parking area.
