Pink Sands Beach

Three miles of blush-coloured sand and Atlantic rollers on the Bahamas' most photographed shore.

Pink Sands Beach stretches for three uninterrupted miles along the eastern shore of Harbour Island, its blush-coloured sand created by countless crushed foraminifera — tiny marine organisms with bright pink shells. The beach consistently ranks among the world's most beautiful, and its gentle gradient into warm Atlantic waters makes it ideal for swimming and wading.

The pink hue is most vivid when the sand is wet or caught in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon. Walk in either direction and you will quickly find quiet stretches with only the sound of waves for company.

Why the sand is pink

The distinctive colour comes from foraminifera, single-celled organisms that live in the offshore coral reefs. Their calcium carbonate shells range from bright red to pale pink. When the creatures die, waves crush and deposit their shells on the beach, mixing with white sand and coral fragments to produce the famous blush.

The intensity of the colour varies — it appears most saturated after rain or when wet by the tide. Viewing angle and time of day also affect perception, with mornings and late afternoons highlighting the rose tones.

Swimming & beach activities

The beach shelves gradually, so the water stays shallow and warm far out from shore. Swimming conditions are generally calm, though the Atlantic side can see larger swells than the protected harbour. Snorkelling is possible where rocky outcrops meet the sand, though the main reef is offshore.

Beachcombing, paddleboarding, and simply lounging are the primary pastimes. Several resorts provide beach chairs and umbrellas for guests, while public access points allow anyone to enjoy the sand.

Beachfront dining & resorts

Pink Sands Resort and Coral Sands Hotel sit directly on the beach, offering upscale accommodation with direct sand access. Non-guests can often enjoy lunch or drinks at beachside restaurants.

Sip Sip, perched above the dunes near the southern end, is a local institution known for lobster quesadillas and frozen rum punches with panoramic beach views.

Getting there

From Dunmore Town, walk or golf cart east along any cross-street to reach the beach in minutes — it spans the entire ocean side of the island. Visitors arriving at North Eleuthera Airport take a taxi to the dock and water taxi to Harbour Island, then proceed on foot or golf cart.
