Pigeon Cay Anchorage
A spectacular beach anchorage at Cat Island's northern tip with powder-soft sand, excellent holding, and the famous Pigeon Creek mangrove system to explore.
Pigeon Cay anchors the northern end of Cat Island, offering cruisers a spectacular beach anchorage with powder-soft white sand, excellent holding, and protection from east through north winds. The area is renowned among sailors for its pristine natural beauty and access to Pigeon Creek, one of the most extensive mangrove creek systems in the Out Islands.
The anchorage delivers quintessential Bahamas cruising: crystal-clear water over white sand, uncrowded beaches, and wildlife-rich waterways to explore by dinghy or kayak. The creek system extends deep into Cat Island's interior, providing hours of exploration through mangrove-lined passages where birdlife, rays, and juvenile sea creatures abound.
Approach and Anchoring
Pigeon Cay lies at the northern end of Cat Island, accessible from the open water to the west. The anchorage area features excellent white sand holding with occasional large coral heads that provide decent snorkeling right off the boat. The beach drops off quickly to 6 feet or more, with smooth sand extending about 100 yards offshore.
Anchor approximately 200 feet off the beach in 10 feet of water, selecting a sandy patch clear of the visible coral heads. The holding is excellent in the sand. Protection is good from east through north winds, and the anchorage can handle moderate NNW conditions with only wrap-around chop.
Protection and Conditions
Pigeon Cay offers protection from prevailing easterly winds and provides a comfortable lee in most typical Bahamas weather patterns. The anchorage can tolerate moderate northwest winds, though some chop may wrap around the point.
As with all Cat Island anchorages, westerly and strong southerly winds create untenable conditions. The open exposure to the west means cruisers should monitor forecasts carefully and be prepared to relocate when weather patterns shift. Hawks Nest Marina at Cat Island's southern tip provides the only all-weather refuge on the island.
Pigeon Creek Exploration
Pigeon Creek is famous among cruisers and kayakers for its extensive mangrove waterways teeming with wildlife. The main creek is wide and deep enough for dinghy exploration, while numerous branch creeks invite kayak or paddleboard adventures through narrower passages.
The creek system provides habitat for wading birds, rays, juvenile sharks, and various fish species. The interconnected waterways can be explored for hours, with new channels and basins revealing themselves around each bend. Time your exploration with the tides for easier passage through shallower sections.
Beach and Surroundings
The beach at Pigeon Cay exemplifies the powder-soft sand that has made the Bahamas famous. The gentle slope into the water creates ideal conditions for swimming and wading, while the occasional coral heads provide snorkeling opportunities without leaving the anchorage.
The northern tip of Cat Island feels genuinely remote, with no commercial development or tourist infrastructure. Bring all provisions, water, and fuel, as no services are available in this area. The solitude and natural beauty make Pigeon Cay a memorable highlight of any Cat Island cruise.
