Current Cut Anchorage
A dramatic tidal gateway where powerful currents carve through narrow straits, offering protected anchorage and thrilling drift snorkelling.
Current Cut is one of the most dramatic natural features along the Eleuthera coast, a narrow 300-foot-wide channel where tidal currents can reach velocities approaching 10 knots. This powerful flow connects the shallow Bight of Eleuthera with the deeper Northeast Providence Channel, creating challenging navigation for vessels but spectacular drift snorkelling for those who time their visit to slack tide.
Protected anchorages lie on both sides of the cut, offering shelter depending on wind direction. Current Settlement on the Eleuthera side is a peaceful community of approximately 50 residents, while Current Island across the passage provides an alternative lee. The area rewards cruisers with natural drama, excellent snorkelling, and a glimpse of authentic Out Island life.
Navigating the Cut
Current Cut demands respect. Tidal currents routinely reach 6 to 8 knots during spring tides, with velocities occasionally approaching 10 knots in the strongest flows. The current is closest to slack approximately one and a half hours after high water at Nassau, though conditions vary with wind and atmospheric pressure.
Approaching from the west, pick up waypoint N 25° 25.496', W 76° 49.361' approximately 2.3 nautical miles northwest of the cut. Set a course of 130 degrees true for about 2.5 miles to enter the passage. Avoid transiting when current opposes wind, as steep standing waves can develop. For vessels with limited power, consider the gentler Six Shilling Channel, 11 miles to the south.
Anchorages and Protection
Good anchorage in sand is available northwest of Current Settlement in depths of 10 to 14 feet, offering protection from east-northeast through south-southeast winds. Low bluffs provide shelter and the holding is reliable in sandy patches. This anchorage serves cruisers waiting for optimal conditions to transit the cut.
On the eastern side, anchorage north of Current Island Settlement provides protection from southerly through westerly winds. The holding here is also good in sand at similar depths. Cruisers can shift between the two anchorages as wind direction changes, using the cut's powerful currents only when conditions are favourable.
Drift Snorkelling
Current Cut offers some of the most thrilling drift snorkelling in the Bahamas. At slack tide or during gentler flows, snorkellers can ride the current through the narrow passage, observing reef fish, rays, and occasionally sharks in the nutrient-rich waters. The current brings deep-water species into view, creating a dynamic underwater environment.
Timing is critical for safety. Never enter the cut during peak current flow, and always have a boat standing by to retrieve snorkellers at the downstream end. The experience is best for confident swimmers with drift snorkelling experience. Local operators can provide guided trips with appropriate safety support.
Current Settlement
Current Settlement on the Eleuthera shore is a quiet community of roughly 50 residents, founded approximately 200 years ago. The village features a small grocery store (Durham's General Store), an old Methodist church, and a post office that doubles as the local library. The pace is unhurried and visitors are welcomed warmly.
The settlement provides a glimpse of authentic Out Island life far from tourist development. Provisions are limited, so stock up in Spanish Wells or Governor's Harbour before arriving. The community's modest resources and peaceful atmosphere make it a refreshing change from more developed Bahamian destinations.
